VOIP
How we have set up our voip system and saved money.
We have optus cable with the sprint plan. http://personal.optus.com.au/web/ocaportal.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=personal_cable_producttypeHSD_marketSegmentres&productpath=/personal/internet&FP=/personal/internet/broadband/cable/plansandratescable&site=personal
We also have a phone line with optus which reduces the sprint plan price by $10 to $39.95. This gives 2GB per month plus 4GB from 12am to 12pm. voip uses about 300M per month.
Freshtel.com.au is our voip provider. They have a $9.95 per month deal that gives a phone number and charges 10c per call untimed for all of Australia.
We use a netcomm v200 voip router (http://www.shopbot.com.au/p-18487.html), but my brother in law has the v300 (see further down the document - http://www.netcomm.com.au/pdfs/VoipHardwareBrochureApril06.pdf)
I bought the v200 for about $140.
We also have a landline with optus which costs $19 per month the homebasic. (http://personal.optus.com.au/web/ocaportal.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=personal_telephony_producttypeTEL_marketSegmentres&productpath=/personal/telephony&FP=/personal/homephone/homephoneplans&site=personal)
since having the phone line brings the cable cost down, it is effectively a $10 line rental ($9 to be precise).
Thus we have 2 phone lines and cheap calls. If you use the v300 you can have just one phone.
It also means that if there is a power failure we can still call out.
A downside is that we have to reboot the v200 occasionally. Also you should take into account the power costs. The modem and router must be on at all times which comes to about $30-40 a year.
